Book lovers invited to our Women’s Book Fair, Saturday 26th May

Derby Women’s Centre will be holding a Women’s Book Fair on Saturday, 26th May between 10am and 2pm to raise funds for our women’s counselling service. There will also be coffee and cake on sale baked by our very own communications officer, Rose.

We have hundreds of great books from our former library, so we decided to turn the Women’s Centre into a book café for the day.  All the books are by or about women; on sale will be titles by Virginia Woolf, Margret Atwood and Mary Wollstonecraft to name but a few!

It will also be a good chance for those who are new to the Derby area or do not know the Women’s Centre to find out more about  some of the activities and services we offer.

We will gladly accept donations of books for the event. All money raised will go to continuing to provide counselling to women in the Derby area.

The event takes place at our the centre, near Westfield, at 4 Leopold Street, Derby, DE1 2HE. To contact us about book donations please call the centre on 01332 341633.

We hope to see you there!

Week at Derby Women’s Centre “a valuable experience”

Liz, a student health visitor and midwife, has spent the last week at Derby Women’s Centre to learn more about what services are available for women in and around Derby. We’ve really enjoyed having Liz here this week. Here’s what she has to say about her week here.

Liz in the Derby Wome’s Centre office

“Working briefly at Derby Women’s Centre has been a truly valuable experience and has felt like being part of a family.

From speaking to the women who come here it is evident that they feel the same and find it comfortable to talk to staff, volunteers and other women. The centre welcomes women of all ages and backgrounds and benefits from the diversity this brings. Read the full post »

Why women only?

A question Derby Women’s Centre staff and volunteers often get asked is: why is the centre just for women?

The centre was founded in 1978 to address inequalities faced by women and empower them to lead independent lives. A lot has changed since the 70s, but unfortunately gender inequality persists. Women are at a greater risk of poverty than men, make up the vast majority of domestic violence victims (at least 1 in 4 women will experience some form of domestic violence in their lives) and are more likely to experience mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

To help women overcome these issues, we feel that a women only space provides a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental environment for women to come to access support. Some of the women who come to the centre have been through traumatic experiences and would feel intimidated if they thought men would be around. A lot of the women who come to the centre value an all female space where they can build a support network with other women.

Because the centre is just for women, all staff and volunteers are women too. Our recruitment policy has caused some controversy in the past. In July 1991, a story ran in the Derby Telegraph about Derby Women’s Centre refusing to take on a male board member. We’ve relaxed our policy somewhat since then – one of our current board members is  male. However, all the staff and volunteers working in the building are women, and when there are male visitors in the building we have a sign up to let our service users know.

In short, we think that a centre just for women still has an important function. As ever, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter, so please join in the discussion and comment below.

Derby Women’s Centre garden in bloom

The flowers in the Derby Women’s Centre garden are looking lovely in today’s sunshine. They’ve certainly cheered us up in the office, so we thought we’d share them with you. If you’re particularly green-fingered, have a go at naming the pretty white flower at the bottom of the post.

Bluebells - hyacinthoides non-scripta

Black tulips - tulipa

Do you know the name of this pretty white flower?

Interested in volunteering at the Women’s Centre?

We are currently looking for volunteers to join our small and friendly team and help the centre continue to deliver services to vulnerable women in Derby and Derbyshire. Interested?

The roles we have at the moment are a marketing volunteer and a fundraising assistant. Click on the links to find the full role descriptions on the do-it.org website. The roles would be perfect for those interested working in marketing, fundraising and charity roles.

Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and learn new skills, as well as gain experience to improve your CV. Previous volunteers have enjoyed their time at the centre, especially as we encourage volunteers to take charge of their own projects, and have gone on to find suitable employment.

DWC staff and volunteers, June 2011

We’re looking for people who are enthusiastic, committed and aren’t afraid to share ideas. Good communications skills and the ability to work as part of a team. Due to the nature of our services we can only take on female volunteers, sorry guys!

If you’re interested in any of these roles, apply via the do-it.org website or by emailing Rose with details of which role you are interested in and why, and what experience you could bring to the centre.

We’re looking forward to hearing from you!

DWC to run domestic violence drop-in sessions

From 2nd May 2012 DWC will be running bi-monthly drop-in sessions for women who are suffering from domestic abuse.

Between 10am and noon, women will be able to come to the centre for support, information and advice on domestic violence and issues such as safe housing or welfare benefits. The sessions will be run by Elaine, services coordiantor at DWC, who has many years experience in supporting women who have suffered from domestic violence. Other DWC staff will also be on hand to offer assistance. For more information call the centre on 01332 341633.

Domestic violence is physical, sexual, psychological or financial violence that takes place within an intimate or family-type relationship and that forms a pattern of coersive or controlling behaviour. Domestic violence is very common and affects one in four women during their lifetimes regardless of age, social class, race, disability or lifestyle (Women’s Aid 2012).

DWC receives £47,000 grant for debt, benefit, housing and employment advice

Derby Women’s Centre is thrilled to announce that it has won a grant from a £16.8m central government pot.

We have received £47,000 from the Advice Services Fund to provide support and guidance on debt, benefits, housing and unemployment problems.

The fund – financed by the Office for Civil Society and delivered by the Big Lottery Fund – aims to support organisations that have been affected by cuts in public spending to provide free advice to people in their communities in England.

DWC chief executive Yasmin Nazir said: “We’re thrilled that the Advice Services Fund liked our bid and the funding is a real help to the centre at a time when government funding for charities is becoming scarcer.

“We will now be able to offer greater support to women in financial difficulty. Women on low incomes, especially single mothers, often struggle with debt, benefit and housing issues, made worse by the unemployment crisis, which has hit women hardest.” Read the full post »

DWC proud owners of 4 Leopold Street

DWC staff at 4 Leopold street, which the charity now owns

Derby Women’s Centre is pleased to announce that it is now the proud owner of 4 Leopold Street, Derby.

Derbyshire County Council recently transferred the property into our ownership through the community asset transfer initiative, which allows local councils to help local community groups and voluntary sector organisations take on responsibility for buildings or land in their area.

The deal will save the centre money and give us much more flexibility with cash flow. It will also allow us to rent out extra space in the centre to create income.

Yasmin Nazir, our chief executive, said: “We are thrilled. Owning the building has really been a lifeline in the current climate.

Mystery donation boosts fundraising appeal to £979

DWC has raised £979 in a recent fundraising appeal for counselling – £179 over the £800 target - thanks to an anonymous donation of £500 from a lady who used to have counselling at the centre. A huge thank you to all who donated, whatever the amount!

Rose Williams, communications officer, who received the mystery donation, said: “I was opening the mail, as usual, when out of one of the letters fell a £500 charity cheque with a note attached, it was quite a surprise! In the note, the benefactor explained that they had been following the news of Derby Women’s Centre’s funding difficulties and wanted to help, though they wanted their name to be kept anonymous.”

DWC’s current funding situation

Last Tuesday, Derby City Council recommended to the cabinet that DWC’s funding should be cut. The decision came after the publication of the results of a consultation with the public on the matter, which ended on December 31st 2012. If the council’s cabinet confirm this decision later today the centre will lose the council’s funding from May 2012. Read the full post »

We’ve already had some fantastic support, including a donation of £200 from Ray Gumbley, who pledged £25 and persuaded his friends and family to do the same. Thanks Ray!

DWC funding cuts “not good business sense”, says entrepreneur

Entrepreneur and DWC patron Kavita Oberoi

Local entrepreneur and DWC patron Kavita Oberoi has recently spoken out in support of the centre in response to Derby City Council’s proposed cuts to our funding. She said in a statement:

I became a patron of Derby Women’s Centre in 2010 because its work complements my own desire to see more women challenge barriers in the workplace and break the “glass ceiling”. The women’s centre does an excellent job helping women overcome personal difficulties, socio-economic inequalities and improve employment skills and confidence, which all contribute toward enabling women to fulfil their potential.

Jo Brand, Derby Women's Centre patron since 1994

DWC patron says women at a real risk if centre were to close

Comedian Jo Brand has added her voice to calls to save Derby Women’s Centre from Derby City Council’s proposed funding cuts.

Brand said in a statement:

The assurance of a women-only environment, the confidentiality and non-judgemental welcome all women receive needs to continue in Derby. Any suggestion of a reduced service or closure amounts to women at real risk of having nowhere else to go or denied the choice of where to go.
